During "StreetScore 1", we received around 120 responses to surveys and conversations about street works, how they impacted your lives and those we care and advocate for. From these, we discovered that:

-
71% agreed that street works negatively impact those they care for, or advocate for.
-
40% of individuals mentioned feeling unsafe being near traffic or having no safe crossing areas.
-
30% of individuals mentioned that signage was insufficient or confusing.

You also suggested improvements such as:

-
Signage with clearer information
-
Design works around the most vulnerable (and adversely affected) first
-
More education/training for staff to understand the needs of vulnerable groups navigating the works
-
More stable ramps
-
More consideration of the pedestrian experience
-
Fewer diversions onto busy roads
-
Better assisted crossings to lessen confusion and even danger for pedestrians

We used this feedback to identify over twenty options for improving street works. The design philosophy we used was:

-
Strive to make sure "Access for all" is at the heart of this work.
-
Look for ways to enhance empathy to be demonstrated by the operatives to the pedestrians, especially to vulnerable individuals.
-
Increase the opportunities for positive interaction between the general public and operatives/companies
-
Where possible, establish a greater sense of balance between pedestrians and other forms of transportation.
